How To Create Glow-In-the-Dark Neon Rice! Kids Rainy Day DIY Project

Today we are talking about rice.  Not any old normal rice, but special fun Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice!  This ain’t your grandma’s rice, and we wouldn’t recommend boiling up some water and cooking it.  Buuut if you have little ones (meaning children) this is the best, easy to clean up, and SAFE fun indoor kids sand alternate activity ! This is perfect for indoor rainy days and because its made in small batches, plays best in a small plastic bin to keep it contained.  The coolest part about Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice is you can make it in a few different colors which all glow and light up – and you know how kids looooove their Glow-In-The-Dark toys!

Without further ado – lets learn how to make some Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice!

Neon Rice Ingredients

  • Rice (approximately 2 bags)
  • Blue and Purple Food Dye (or which ever colors you want)
  • Lavender Essential Oils (BUY HERE)
  • (1) Pastic Bin
  • (2) Resealable Gallon (Ziploc style) Bags (gallon size suggested)

Neon Rice Instructions (Part 1)

  • Divide the rice evenly into the two Resealable bags.
  • Add 5-10 drops of essential oil into your rice (BUY HERE)
  • Add as 10-15 drops of food dye into each bag (Blue in one, purple in the other).
  • Seal Ziploc bag and shake vigorously.
  • Pour rice into Rubbermaid and set aside to dry for about an hour.

*Note the first part of this just colors the rice so it is more interesting to play with in the light!  The second part (below) explains how to turn the Neon Rice into Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice! Also you can divide the rice up further to add more colors as well!

Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice Ingredients

  • Your Bin of Neon Rice
  • Glow-In-The-Dark Paint (BUY IT HERE)
  • (2) Resealable Gallon (Ziploc style) Bags (gallon size suggested)

Glow-In-The-Dark Neon Rice Instructions (Part 2)

  • Take dried now colored rice from Part 1
  • Divide into your 2 Resealable Bags
  • Mix an additional  5 drops of essential oils per bag
  • Pour in 1 ounces of glow in the dark paint per bag – or enough to cover all of the rice
  • Thoroughly mix paint with rice until all is covered
  • Pour painted rice back into your plastic bin, let dry in sun or well lit area
  • Check to stir and for dryness
  • Once painted rice has thoroughly dried – start playing!

*Note – drying time wiht the paint varies depending on humidity, and airflow.  To dry faster dry in front of a fan and/or under direct lights or even outside if its a nice day!  Also try switching it up and only coloring part of your rice with Glow-In-The-Dark paint to have it intermingle with the plain colored rice!
